CARE FOR THE CAREGIVER

The caregiver persona of being very giving, putting others first, and always being accessible is very commendable. But to be an effective caregiver to a family member or close friend, you must first begin with caring for yourself.
Follow these tips toward self-care to help become the best caregiver you can be!
- Keep “tuned-in” to your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours to help maintain balance and prevent burnout. Consider mindfulness exercises as a strategy.
- Maintain good health practices such as eating nutritionally, exercising regularly, and obtaining adequate sleep.
- Be realistic in what you are actually able to provide.
- Saying no does not make you a “bad” person- everyone has their limits.
- Take a break- occasionally allow others to takeover.
Remember, effective caregivers are those who first take care of themselves!
