WE ARE WALKING, AGAIN?

It really is great having my human family around all the time, thanks Covid but I am even happier that they are mindful of my fur coat and the hot weather out there. You guys all know I am a husky and well shaving me is not an option. It is not healthy for me to be shaved. Everyone is always offering to walk me lately and some of those are really long walks….it is nice to be fought over for my walks. Seriously though, here are the rules of my house for summer heat that my family is firm with. I am sharing because sometimes our human families get so preoccupied and they may forget that we dogs release heat through panting, our paw pads and nose. Signs of heat stroke include excessive panting, collapse and excessive dribbling. It is so important that we do not get to the point of heatstroke. So let’s talk prevention.
- Never leave us in a car.
- Sidewalks are really hot. Our humans wear shoes but imagine walking barefoot on hot cement or asphalt. Grass and dirt are cooler. You can always wipe or wash our paws if they get dirty.Carry clean water for walks for a drink.
- If you notice signs of overheating then please stop and let’s rest in the shade and give me a cool drink.
- On hot days please walk me during the cooler part of the day. Early Morning or late evening is best. Can you imagine walking in a snowsuit and boots in the summer? Even with a shave or a hair cut we still can get over heated.
- If you leave me in the backyard, leave me lots of cold water and shade but please don’t keep me out for too long.
- I am really fit but for my friends that are older, or are over weight or are short nosed , a short running around can bring on heat stroke in the summer months.
Thanks for listening, my friends appreciate it!
